Description

This sterling silver spice box was selected as a finalist entry in the 1998 competition of the Spertus Museum in Chicago.  Seven petals, for the seven days of the week, cradle a ball which holds the spice.  One side of the ball is oxidized, the other bright and with a pierced flower design, letting out the fragrance of the spices.  When the havdalah ceremony is over the ball can be inverted, sealing the slits and revealing the darkened side, symbolically marking the difference between light and darkness, Sabbath and weekday.
