The creation and use of handmade Judaica fulfills the Rabbinic dictum of hidur mitzvah, the enhancement of ritual objects which add a note of beauty and attention to observance of mitzvot. The ritual arts are visual cues that connect us to the spirituality we are seeking.
Moocho Scott Salomon is a second generation weaver. After weaving her wedding chuppah in 1982, she began to realize the spiritual significance of handwoven Judaica. Leaving a career of mass marketed production handweaving, she now focuses on the Jewish community, providing limited edition tallitot and customized chuppot. She also welcomes community b'nai mitzvah children into her home so they can weave their own tallitot. This connection to her community has awarded her the Traditional Arts Fellowship Award from New Hampshire Council on the Arts. Moocho is a member of the American Guild of Judaic Art and the only recipient in the country to earn three Masters of Handweaving Certificates from the Handweavers Guild of America.
Tallitot
The tallitot shown here differ greatly from manufactured or "handloomed" products. The finest natural fibers are used to produce the fabrics. Each limited edition piece is set up by the weaver thread by thread. The cloth is woven by hand with a boat shuttle, exhibiting the artist's handwork and patience with each woven inch. Lace techniques are incorporated, an impossibility with mechanization. Finishing of the tallit is carefully performed by the artist with hand tied fringe and kosher tzitzit. Each tallit package includes a matching kippah and bag.
